Recommended Book For Design Beginners

I was born in early October, a Libra. It is said that every Libra is a born artist. The constellation thing may not be accurate, but I do have an interest in art related stuff. In junior middle school, I took painting classes for two years, yet for some reasons it didn’t continue. Instead, I was enrolled to college as a physics major. And now, I am in the trading business! Life is just full of surprises. The comfort is that, I deal with wall décor related products here with WholePort. There are always beautiful, artsy things to look at.

So when our company, traditionally a trading and manufacturer, decided to launch the ecommerce business, and had a website, I felt somehow my artist dream had a place to grow. The photographing and web page designing work could be my new try, maybe.

I tried, but had to give up. Web designing is a very professional job which couldn’t be learnt overnight. I had to stay to be a fan of this for the time being. It is never too late to learn new tricks, and lat least through learning I could be a connoisseur for artistic designing, right? That’s how I stumbled upon Robin Williams’ Non-Designer’s Design Book. This book, by its name, sounded like a perfect match for my state of being a designing layman and fan. Actually, I am thankful I came across this book. It had entered my personal “top-3-readings-of-the-year” list.

Robin Williams wrote the book in a very straight-forward but interesting way. Her way of introducing the design theory, the typefaces, and the colors, etc. are juicy and concise. A beginner as I was, what she meant to say was clear enough to be understood. Graphic designing is quite challenging for a layment, who wants to acheive a professional look with the first work. It is amazing to talk about the basics with such ease. I tried to search for other books written by Robin Williams. Soon I decided my next big reading should be Design Workshop. It is for sure that reading Robin Williams’ books cultivates my passion for design.

Hope you share the joy of reading the books as well!
